Learn how to use your XNS on Insolar MainNet by reading our mini-series on Insolar native coin uses. The first is about payments.

This is the first of a four-part mini-series to explain what you can do with your XNS on Insolar MainNet. What is XNS XNS is the primary coin powering enterprise blockchain adoption. Payments are just one aspect of XNS, but a vital one as they allow for value to be transferred from one network user to another. XNS is Insolar MainNet native coin. It is used as a medium of exchange for transferring value to settle application fees, resource fees, and subsidies within the network. Who you can pay Application fees are paid to developers who have created dApps on Insolar MainNet and the developers can charge XNS to use the applications. Resource fees relate to charges from node holders who provide computational power to network participants. This is linked to Insolar’s cloud capability, whereby users in a network do not have to own their own node in order to participate in the network. Instead, just as with cloud computing, the user can pay to use computing infrastructure held elsewhere. Let’s take a look at how XNS can be used as a payment instrument. Example: educational platform application An application developer creates an educational platform app on Insolar MainNet for users to learn English. Educational organizations, who provide courses, and students are onboarded to the platform. The interactions between students and the educational organizations are tracked by Insolar. These interactions involve subscriptions to services, usage fees and the like. Every interaction that takes place is logged by special smart contracts in a separate domain of the Insolar MainNet. Educational materials such as videos and quizzes are held using a cloud provider and not on servers housed by the educational organizations. The student users are billed in XNS for their use of the educational organizations’ materials. The payment is transferred to the educational organizations for usage of their service once per month. This works similarly to Platform as a Service (PaaS) model. In turn, the educational organizations are billed for their usage of cloud computing infrastructure and the hosting of the materials. This works similarly to Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model. Insolar MainNet also tracks user usage of the educational organizations’ services and, as per agreement with the application developer, the educational organizations pay the developer a fee per onboarded paying customer. The XNS coins can be cashed out using exchanges or they can be reused within the Insolar MainNet economy to pay for application or infrastructure usage. Up next The next explainer in our XNS mini-series will explain how staking takes place on Insolar MainNet and how you can stake your coins. Check our Github and leave feedback on the code.
